Rabindranath Tagore, Bengali Rabīndranāth Ṭhākur, (born May 7, 1861, Kolkatta [now Kolkata], India—died August 7, 1941, Calcutta), Bengali poet, short-story writer, Song composer, playwright, essayist, and painter who introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was highly influential in introducing Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of early 20th-century India. In 1913 he became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.


1. Rabindranath Tagore was born at Calcutta in West Bengal as the son of Maharshi Devendranath Tagore and Sarda Devi.
2. One of Rabindranath's brothers, Satyendranath Tagore was the first Indian to get selected for the ICS in 1864.
3. In 1901, Tagore established a school at Shanti Niketan which finally developed into the world famous University of Viswa Bharati in 1921.
4. In 1912 TAgore Published Jana Gana Mana (Now India's National Anthem).
5. The National anthem is composed in the Raga, 'Sankarabharanam'.
6. The English translation of the national anthem is "The morning song of India".
7. National anthem was first sung at the Calcutta session of INC (1911).
8. India accepted it as our national anthem on 24 January 1950.
9. 'Bharat Vidhata' was the first name of National anthem.
10. National anthem was first published in the book 'Tatvabodhini'.
11. In 1913, Tagore's Gitanjali was selected for the Nobel prize for Literature.


12. Tagore also wrote the national anthem of Bangladesh 'Amar Sonar Bengla'.
13. In 1915, Tagore was awarded Knighthood by the British Monarch George V, but he surrendered it in 1919 as a protest against the Jallianwallabagh Massacre.
14. 'Jeevan Smrithi' is the autobiography of Tagore.
15. 'Gora', 'Raja and Rani', 'Rajarishi', 'Kabooliwala' etc are the famous novels of Tagore.
16. 'Purabhi', 'The cycle of the spring' 'The Evening Song' 'The Morning Song' etc are the other famous works of Tagore.
